Friends of Hospice...

History and Purpose

Friends of Hospice was established in 1990 as a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization by two caring individuals -- a business woman whose parents had been recipients of hospice care and a nurse.  They shared a common desire to help patients and their families deal with the financial difficulties associated with terminal illness.  They chose to support the patients of the Hospice of North Penn Visiting Nurse Association.

Friend of Hospice has grown in membership as well as fundraising goals.

Use of Funds

The money raised by Friends of Hospice is used to ease the burden that can be experienced by patients and families while dealing with a life-limiting illness.  Examples of the support received through Friends of Hospice include:

  • Medication for symptom and pain control

  • Household expenses

  • Home Health Aides

  • Family support as requested by the  social worker

  • Tube feedings

  • Respite care

  • Educational resources

Families who receive care from Hospice of North Penn VNA are eligible to place a request for funds through the hospice social worker.

A Look to the Future

As Friends of Hospice looks ahead, there is a need for hospice care to be provided in a facility that offers a home-like environment.  That is why a long term goal for Friends of Hospice is to create a free standing facility or dedicated area to fulfill this need.

Making a Donation

If you would like to make a donation to help fulfill the unmet needs of hospice families, please make your check payable to “Friends of Hospice” and mail to:

Light Up a Life - November 2009
Light up a Life is an annual fundraising event that has commemorated the lives of deceased friends and family members since 1990.  By purchasing lights on an evergreen tree at the North Penn VNA, participants can recognize a friend or loved one who has passed.  A simple tree lighting ceremony is held to read the names of those being remembered.
